Description

A map from an exceedingly rare Ottoman atlas Sağîr Coğrafya Atlası (Small Atlas of Geography), which was based on the maps from Atlas de géographie ancienne et moderne by Ch. Barberet and Ch. Périgot. The work was one of the first Ottoman printed modern atlases.

The atlas included maximum 33 maps (Osmanlı coğrafya literatürü tarihi, p. 652) , but was probably also sold with less maps, depending on the wishes of the buyer. In 2019, we have owned an atlas with 14 maps. Worldcat lists only two institutional examples: Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden with 8 maps and Orient-Institut Istanbul with 10 maps.

Marked are the journeys by David Livingstone from 1849 and 1856.
