Description

A yugonostalgic map from 1974 shows one way streets of Belgrade. The map accompanied an September edition of a popular newspaper Politika, published in Serbia.

The map shows one-way streets, public transports, gas stations, car-repairs, pedestrian streets and “blue zones” – parking places for vehicles with special licences.

The traffic regulations in Belgrade were considered as extremely progressive in the mid 1970s and the city was investing substantial amounts of money an energy in its development and propaganda.  Between 2.-7th September the city ws hosting a International Study Week Traffic Engineering and Safety. 

In 1972 Beograd launched a plan for modernizing its infrastructure in order to accomodate the growing population. By the calculations the population should grow up to 1.670.000 until the year 2000. Many television shows hosted urbanists and architects to present the new architectural plans to the public.
