A rare, seemingly unrecorded tobacco atlas of Bulgarian regions was made on the eve of WWII, in 1940, in Plovdiv. Some manuscript annotations were added up to 1944.

Description

Folio (43 x 30 cm / 17 x 11.8 inches). 12 maps photographically reproduced in technique of whiteprint (43 x 51 cm / 17 x 20 inches), in original paper binding with printed title (Very Good, slightly age-toned and stained, tears in folds, some manuscript annotations, wrappers dusty and age-toned with tears and stains).

 

This rare unrecorded atlas with charts in Bulgarian language presents the tobacco industry in 1940, a years before the country entered the war.  

Until WWII tobacco was one of the main export products of Bulgaria with Plodiv being one of the tobacco centres. In 1927 German, French, and Belgian capitalwas invested in the city in development of modern trade, banking, and industry.

On March 1st, 1941 Bulgaria entered WWII on the side of the Axis powers. During WWII the tobacco industry even expanded, until September 9, 1944, when the Red Army entered the country. The manuscript annotations in the atlas on p. 1. Showcase the statistics in the Plovdiv region from 1941 until 1944. The other chats were not filled in since the atlas was printed.

We could not trace any other examples on the market nor in institutions worldwide.
