Description
Baltasar LOPES DA SILVA (1907 – 1989).
Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde: Claridade – Publisher; Tipografia Cardoso, Calçada do Forte, Lisbon, Printer 1947.
This novel, which establishes the genre in Cape Verde, was written by the prominent native Cape Verdean author Baltasar Lopes da Silva (1907–1989). Based on his own experiences, the story follows a boy nicknamed Chiquinho in his native village of Caleijão. Many residents of this village, including Chiquinho’s father, have migrated to the United States. After studying, starting his career as a teacher, and meeting intellectuals from Cape Verde, Chiquinho ultimately decides to leave behind the bleak economic situation of the islands and immigrate to the United States himself.
The book was published in 2000 examples by Claridade Press, a progressive publishing company founded in 1936 in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. This was during a challenging period for such organizations under the Salazar regime. Claridade Press published works in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole and was particularly known for its literary review and the movement of the same name.
The novel is part of the collection of Alfredo Ribeiro dos Santos (1917-2012), a renowned bibliophile, collector, author, medical doctor, and opponent of the Salazar regime.
