Description
GOVÊRNO GERAL DE ANGOLA. REPARTIÇÂO DE ESTUDOS ECONÓMICOS.
[Angola Fair Exhibition. Angola’s Economic Activity]
Luanda: 1938.
In 1938, a large exhibition of Portuguese modern influence on Angola was inaugurated at the occasion of much publicized visit of the Portuguese president Óscar Carmona in Luanda. The fair, which followed the Historical Exhibition of the Occupation (“Exposição Histórica da Ocupação”) in Lisbon two years before, showcased modern Art-Deco architecture and design, brought by the colonialists to Angola with a goal to modernize and westernize the country.
The present publication is an especially elaborate catalogue. The handsome photographs showcase magnificent Art Deco pavilions, their interiors, furniture and details. The book was published as a part of the magazine Actividade ecónomica de Angola, combining numbers 9-12 from March to December 1938.
The design for the pavilions was probably made by an architect Vasco Vieira da Costa and the photos by Firmino Marques da Costa, who signed as C. Duarte.
Worldcat lists examples in following libraries: Bibliothèque nationale de France, Stanford University, ZBW – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft, Standort Kiel and New York Public Library. The title could be confused with two other catalogues of the same exhibition: Album comemorativo da Exposição-feira de Angola and Exposiçao feira de Angola, Luanda, Agosto 1938, catalogo geral oficial. If is unclear, if the catalogue is also listed under the title of the magazine Actividade ecónomica de Angola.
