The two postcards were written by the renowned German mapmaker Heinrich Kiepert (1818-1899) and sent from Berlin on July 10 and July 12, 1894, to his colleague, the historian, archaeologist, and classical scholar Ernst Fabricius (1857-1942), in Freiburg im Breisgau.
The text discusses Kiepert’s work for “Epigraphica,” which refers to the scientific publication Ephemeris Epigraphica. In this work, Kiepert collaborated with another classic scholar and archaeologist, Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903), on his monumental project regarding Latin inscriptions known as the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL). This collection remains an authoritative source for documenting the surviving inscriptions from classical antiquity in its updated versions.
Kiepert, who contributed maps for various areas, mentions in these two postcards the time constraints he faced in completing the work for the new supplement. He notes that the maps used for the last supplement, published in 1892, were not new, as they had been reused from his previous publications.
