Description

Portrait of Henry IV of Navarre (1553 -1610). Beautiful color aquatint by Jean-François Janinet (1752-1814) based on a draft by Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640).

Janinet was known for his color etchings in the last years of Ancien Régime and during the French Revolution. His first works and experiments with colour printing are dated in 1774. In this time he was mostly etching portraits after famous painters including Hubert Robert, Jean Honoré Fragonard and Jean-Baptiste Greuze. With this printing technique he was aiming to reproduce painted colours and make painting approachable for wider audience. During the revolution he was printing aquatints with political scenes and historical events.
