An exceptionally rare book containing the Austrian national anthem, written in ten languages of the Austrian Empire and published in Lemberg, now known as Lviv in Ukraine.

 

16º. Mispaginated and wrongly bound, but complete: original front wrapper, [1-2] title page, [7]-8, [3]-4, [5]-6, [17]-18, [9]-10, [11]-12, [13]-14, [15]-16, but wrongly numbered as 15, [19]-20, [23]-24, portraits, original rear wrapper. Without pp. 21-22, as originally published.

Bound in later yellow Morocco binding with gold lettering (misspelled title) and blind tooling, later marbled endpapers, bookplate of Lech Kokociński on the inner side of the front board, gold stamp with the name of the bookbinder M. Hoffman on the inner side of the rear board. (minor staining, traces of sporadic old annotations, soft folds, but overall in a good condition).

This unusual booklet features the Austrian national anthem in ten languages of the Empire: German, Italian, Polish, Hungarian, Armenian (written in Latin characters), Ruthenian (similar to modern Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Rusyn languages), a combination of Croatian and Serbian (described as Croatian, Dalmatian and Serbian), Czech (described as Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovakian), Slovenian (referred to as Carniolan and Carinthian), and Romanian.

The double portrait features Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth, famously known as Sissi.

The work was published by the newspaper Hausfreund, and half of the sales proceeds were donated to a fund for the care of invalids in Lviv.

The number of pages in the current example matches that of the one available online at the Lower Silesian Digital Library (Hymnus Nationalis Austriæ). Like our version, it is missing pages 21 and 22, which were likely never published. Additionally, it incorrectly numbers page 16 as page 15 and is bound without regard to the correct page numbering.

The publication is extremely rare, and we have only located two institutional examples, both held in Polish libraries: the Ossoliński National Institute in Wroclaw (with the earlier mentioned example also available at the Lower Silesian Digital Library) and the University Library of Torun.
