The newspaper Tasvir-i efkâr was published between 1862 and 1925 and was the first truly influential newspaper in the Ottoman Empire, and therefor often censored.
It was founded by İbrahim Şinasi (1826 – 1871), an Ottoman author, intellectual and a leader of the secret political group Young Ottomans. In 1865, the editorial job was taken over by Namık Kemal, 1865-1867, who was followed by Mahmut Ekrem, 1867-1868.

The early 20th century issues are known by their elaborate title pages, printed in colour, and highly influential articles, reporting on WWI and Mustafa Kemal.
