Description

YUGOSLAV BOOK DESIGN: The present work features an unusual dustjacket, made in a technique of colour photomontage for a Slovenian translation of Thomas Mann’s Lotte in Weimar. It was drafted by the Slovenian sculptor Jože Pohlen, who lived and worked in the country’s coastal region. Pohlen was proud of his individual style, which he created in the small village of Hrastovlje.

Designer Jože POHLEN(1926-2005)

Pohlen was an academic sculptor, schooled at the Art Institute in Florence and Art Academy in Ljubljana. He was often inspired by his birth village, Hrastovlje, in Istria, where he spent all his adult life.

In 1948, Pohlen discovered in the local church gothic Dance Macabre frescoes, which are today recognized as one of the greatest historical art treasures of Slovenia, and one of the world’s most renown works of their kind.
