A rare separately published large etching shows the battle of Nördlingen, fought on September 5 and 6 1634 at Nördlingen in Bavaria (Swabia) during the Thirty Years’ War, between the Catholic Spanish – Austrian troops against the Protestant Swedish and German army. The Spanish and Austrian army under the leadership of Ferdinand of Austria (169 or 1610 – 1641) and Ferdinand of Hungary (1608 – 1657), later Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III., defeated the Protestant army.
The view was engraved by Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode (Delft, 1591-1645), who came from a family of mapmakers and was a son of Floris Balthasar van Berckenrode (1562/63 – 1616), who worked in the circle of the Dutch statesman Johan van Oldebarnevelt. Around 1600 Floris Balthasar started making maps, which could be useful for the military and state, a tradition continued by his son Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode. Balthasar Florisz moved to Amsterdam, where he worked until 1641 and then to The Hague, where he was active until his death in 1645.
Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode’s maps are usually of larger format and separately published. His maps and prints are rare on the market.
We could only trace four other examples in the libraries worldwide (British Library, National Library of Wales, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Rijksmusum in Amsterdam).
