Description

A book in Ottoman language on horse medicine, physical characteristics, training, correct riding, training horses for jumping, galloping, military skills etc. was published in 1909 in Istanbul. A large part of the book is dedicated to the horse teeth and dental care of domestic animals. Some technical terms are written in French for better understanding, what was at the time common in the Ottoman scientific literature, as many of the words did not exist in Ottoman and had to be newly invented by the writers of such texts.

The book was published by the veterinarian department of the imperial medical office in Istanbul. Some illustrations are signed by Krikor Utudjian, an Armenian printer, illustrator and seller of images in Istanbul.

In the late Ottoman Empire, the sultan tried to modernise the cavalry in order to adjust it to the contemporary military strategies and needs by introducing the European riding methods and training of the horses.

This is the first edition. We could not find any institutional examples on Worldcat.
