Description

This lovely Slovenian translation features the mapping of the The Old Man and the Sea, the dustjacket design showcasing an original graphic representation of the old man’s convoluted journey in pursuit of the fish.

The author of the dustjacket, the academic artist Janez Bernik, represented the old man’s days on the sea using sun and moon disks, combined with a compass, time chart and various free-hand drawn measurements on a patchwork of engineering papers.

Janez Bernik was one of the most prominent Slovenian academic painters of the second half of the 20th century. Schooled at the Ljubljana art academy, with a specialization in painting, he studied under the great professors Maksim Sedej, Božidar Jakac and Riko Debenjak. Bernik continued his education in Paris in the studio of Johnny Friedlaender.
Bernik was subsequently a professor at the Ljubljana academy and a member of the art group Grupa 69, where he was known for his expressionistic, abstract monochrome forms. He was mostly regarded a painter, but was also active as a sculptor, illustrator, as well as a designer of tapestries and books.
