Description

A very rare map shows Swabia in the southwestern Germany, with Suttgart in the middle.

While many maps were made to showcase this key region during this era, the preset map is exceptional in that it is a rare, large English map.  Its author, William Berry (1647 – 1708), was one of the leading figures in great revival in English cartography that occurred in Restoration Era England.  He carved out a niche for himself in the London print world by making attractive and high quality maps, based on authoritative sources.  In this particular case, he used the advanced cartography of Nicolas Sanson, the late French royal cartography.  Most of his maps were both sold separately and included in composite atlases.  While Berry was financially successful, he ran a ‘boutique’ business (as opposed to driving mass production) and most of his maps are today quite scarce.
